Work like a pro! 5 tips for laying pavers

  1. Plan ahead! Before ordering the neccesary amount of pavers, think about the function the surface would serve, the type and extent of usage it’d need to withstand and last but not least, how it should look aesthetically.
  2. If the paved area does not have to withstand a great load, instead of a concrete foundation, gravel might be sufficient. Before settling on the type of foundation you’d like to use, don’t forget to consult an expert to avoid future surprises.
  3. Don’t forget bays! Even bricks with built-in bays need to have a space of at least 1 mm inbetween, while other stones need a bay of 2-3 to 10-30 mms.
  4. Use geotextiles! The aesthetics of the paving stones can be greatly influenced if weed is growing inbetween. You can save yourself energy and extra work if you plan ahead and lay geotextiles under the bricks.
  5. When it comes to sand, size is everything! In order to easily and efficiently spread sand between the stones, it’s advisable to choose fine grains. It not only makes your job easier, it’ll also look more harmonious.

What do I need to do when my order arrives?

When your order arrives, it’s of utmost importance to check if you got everything you ordered. Besides the type, you need to have a closer look at the delivered goods. Read on to see how you can do that!

  1. Check if all the paving stones are intact. It’s very rare, but possible that the ones on the sides of the pallet might get damaged during transport. If that’s the case, never start laying them! Let us (or the partner you ordered the products from) know what happened and we’ll deal with the problem as swiftly as possible.
  2. Check the amount delivered! Look at the goods and the delivery note carefully and check the pallets. If you ordered different colours, make sure that you have the ordered amount of each colour.
  3. Check the quality of the colour of the ordered paving stones. Since the products are made of natural stones, cement, water and colouring matter, there might be a slight difference in the colour of the delivered products, however, these differences are features of the production technology used. There might be white spots on the surface of the bricks. This is the result of a natural process and not a fault of the product. (Read more about limescale buildup here.) There might also be some bricks with rugged surfaces, but that’s so rare we usually advise to use these when you need to cut the bricks up.

In case you come across colour differences other than the ones mentioned above, let us know as soon as possible and we’ll make sure to find the best solution for you. It’s important not to start working with the paving stones even if you ordered several pallets of the same colour and only one of them is affected. This is important because the colour might differ from order to order and paving stones that are not from the production line might not end up giving you a harmonious look. This is especially important when paving larger surfaces.

There are white spots on the pavers, what should I do?

The reason for the phenomenon can be traced back to when the paving stones get in contact with water, resulting in calcium hydroxide deposition. That’s why it’s also called limescale buildup. This kind of deposition is not only caused by rainwater, but groundwater as well. The phenomenon usually appears in the period from autumn to spring due to more rain and humidity. The good news is that the white spots don’t influence the structural integrity and quality of the products and can be easily removed. In most cases, the spots disappear and you don’t have to do anything, but if you want to get rid of them earlier, you can use special limescale cleaning solutions or vinegar mixed with water.

If the appearance of the spots cannot be connected to the weather, it’s best to look for the root cause and solve it. It might be caused by insufficient drainage or ill-adjusted sprinklers. If you have more questions about the topic, let us know!
